Personal Description:
Hi! I'm Adam - I'm a professional clarinettist and passionate music educator based in the London. I’ve built a varied and rewarding career performing with many of the UK’s top orchestras; I’m currently Co-Principal Clarinet of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and have previously held the position of Principal Clarinet No. 2 with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. I’ve also worked with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Aurora Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, London Mozart Players, Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Orchestra of Opera North, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
I’m regularly invited to appear as a soloist with a range of ensembles, with recent highlights including the Copland Clarinet Concerto with The Glasgow Barons and the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with the Piccadilly Sinfonietta. I've also performed concerti by Helen Grime, James MacMillan, and Carl Nielsen. As a recitalist and chamber musician, I’ve performed in venues such as Wigmore Hall, the 1901 Arts Club, the Royal College of Music, and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Tutoring Experience:
As a teacher, I’ve worked with musicians of all ages and abilities. With over seven years of one-to-one teaching experience, I’ve taught clarinettists from beginner level through to conservatoire and professional standard. Due to my busy playing career alongside teaching, I now focus on more advanced players and no longer offer regular weekly lessons or beginner tuition. Instead, I offer consultation lessons for specific technical and performance coaching, e.g. audition preparation, orchestral excerpts, as well as chamber music and orchestral sectional tutoring, workshops, and masterclasses.
I’m have a DipABRSM in Clarinet Teaching with Distinction and am a member of the Disclosure Scotland PVG scheme and hold an Enhanced DBS Certificate.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe in helping students not only develop strong technical and musical skills but also gain the confidence and insight needed to thrive in the professional world. Whether you're preparing for auditions, looking to refine your orchestral excerpts, or just wanting to deepen your connection with the instrument, I tailor each lesson to suit your individual goals.
My own musical journey began through the incredible support of my local music service in North Ayrshire, and that experience has shaped my approach to teaching - I aim to create a supportive and flexible learning environment in which students feel supported and inspired, helping each student build confidence, develop solid technique, and find enjoyment in their playing. Whether someone is working towards exams, performances, or simply playing for pleasure, I tailor my approach to suit their individual goals and experience level. Alongside one-to-one lessons, I also offer consultations on career development, performance preparation, and navigating life as an orchestral musician.
