Personal Description:
I am a bassoon, piano and music theory teacher with over 20 years experience and have worked in numerous high-profile schools including Cheltenham Ladies' College. I was awarded a scholarship to study bassoon at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, from where I graduated in 1989 with a GGSM diploma. In addition, I have ABRSM Grade 8 piano.
I also run a specialist publishing company specialising in arrangements for woodwind such as wind quintets and bassoon quartets. I sell music right around the world and many of my publications are broadcast on radio and television and also released on CD.
Tutoring Experience:
Bassoon: I have over 20 years' experience teaching pupils ranging from 7-70! I teach both privately at home and at schools. I currently bassoon teach privately at home but have previously taught at:
Cheltenham Ladies' College
Badminton School (Bristol)
Redmaids' High School (Bristol)
Cheltenham College
The High School of Glasgow (2005-2016)
Clifton College (Bristol)
Clifton High School (Bristol)
The King's School, Canterbury.
Many of my pupils progress right through to Grade 8/diploma and a number have successfully auditioned for the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland (NYOS) and Junior Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS).
Piano: I have taught piano up to Grade 5 level for many years and, as well as teaching privately at home, I have taught piano at the Rosary School (primary) in Stroud since 2018.
Theory: At Cheltenham Ladies' School I taught one-to-one music theory for five years. All of my pupils gained merits or distinctions at Grade 5. I am very happy to teach theory online too.
Tutoring Approach:
Learning music should be fun and I work hard to build on my pupils' enthusiasm. I invariably demonstrate to pupils how to play as I feel that this is a crucially important part of the learning process.
I regularly enter pupils for Trinity and ABRSM exams, although taking exams is certainly not essential!!
Lessons for beginners to Grade 5 are usually 30 minutes long. More advanced bassoon pupils will need 45-60 minutes.
I am very happy to teach music theory and Grade 6+ bassoon pupils online, via Zoom. For players up to Grade 5 lessons would be in person at my home.
I have an enhanced level DBS certificate and subscribe to the DBS update service.
