Having had a positive experience of compulsory and adult education myself, I have a love of learning and work full-time within a Secondary School, with experience of teaching adults and working in Primary Schools; I am confident teaching conversational English to speakers of other languages, functional skills Maths, Primary-level Science, English & Maths, Study Skills and SEND students.
In my spare time I appreciate nature, enjoy baking and cooking, trips to the theatre and reading non-fiction. My experience of childcare and teaching extends from work with children as young as 2 years to adults in their 30s.
Having worked in education and childcare for nearly ten years, two years has been spent within a Special Needs Secondary School working with children and young adults who have autism and learning disabilities; my role involves understanding their complex needs and using individualised, person-centred and creative approaches that allow them to engage fully with the curriculum and achieve their educational goals.
I have also spent three years working within primary schools, both with neurotypical and neurodiverse children, implementing their Education & Care Plans or their unique learning goals into my planning and delivery of 1:1 lessons and activities. I have experience of teaching primary school aged children (EYFS to Year 6) English, Maths, Science (Biology, Chemistry & Physics) and Geography; I have experience of teaching secondary school aged students with SEND Life Skills, English, Maths and Science.
As a naturally caring, empathetic and approachable person with a resilient nature and outstanding problem-solving and organisational skills, I work in collaboration with the student, providing encouragement that allows them to be an active participant in their learning journey; I help them to understand the curriculum and identify their strengths and areas for improvement so as to devise a personal plan that will allow them to work at a healthy pace to achieving their goals, whether it be improving their knowledge of a subject for personal interest or working towards SATs or another qualification.
I believe in all of my students and nurture in them self-esteem and self-belief, nurturing confidence and resilience that helps them to enjoy learning and push through times of difficulty. I work to understand the student's preferred learning style or method, such as trial-and-error, role modelling, visual/auditory learning or reading, and plan lessons or activities that make use of the student's prior understand to scaffold ongoing learning and development.
