As a fully qualified English teacher and tutor specialising in AQA GCSE English, I have extensive experience of the current requirements of the syllabus.
I have two children and live in Horsham, working at a local sixth form college part time. I have been teaching and tutoring since 2012 but I am new to the First Tutors site.
I understand the impact that effective 1-1 tutoring from a real teacher has on students and truly enjoy working with individuals or in small group sessions.
I am familiar with a wide variety of GCSE English Literature texts including Macbeth, Merchant of Venice, A Christmas Carol, Jekyll and Hyde, Animal Farm, An Inspector Calls, Of Mice and Men and both AQA Poetry anthologies. I can also confidently tailor the sessions to suit alternative texts in the AQA English syllabus should your child study something that is not on this list. I have also taught and tutored a large number of students through the AQA English Language papers and can offer strategies to help students maximise their use of time, as well as advise them on how to gain valuable marks in this demanding section of the course.
I am a friendly, warm and approachable teacher with valid DBS who is experienced at working with all demographics of young people including those with additional needs. I have worked with students who need confidence boosting, as well as those who are dispassionate about English as a compulsory subject. I am a naturally light-hearted person who aims to bring a smile to even the most sullen of faces in order to engage and motivate students to help them reach their full potential. I am happy to tutor in person at my own home, at the home of students or in a cafe or library as well as online. Through focused one to one weekly sessions, I can tailor my approach to suit the individual needs of each student. I can offer evening/weekend sessions as well as Wednesday afternoons which may appeal to home-schooled students or those on reduced timetables. I am very happy to have a chat to talk through any questions you might have or any specific areas of challenge that the student might be facing in English before we start tutoring sessions.
