I am a recently retired history lecturer and a former principal examiner for Edexcel 'A' Level history. Prior to working in higher education, I worked for 20 years as a history teacher in a Kent grammar school. I can offer tutoring in history at all levels from Key Stage 3 to undergraduate.
I taught for 20 years in a Kent grammar school and then moved on to higher education, lecturing in modern British history at the University of Kent. I have extensive experience teaching GCSE and A level history as well as delivering, supervising and examining undergraduate and postgraduate history qualifications. In addition to this, I worked for a number of years as an examiner for GCSE history and a principal examiner for A level history; this latter role invovled setting the A level papers and drawing up the mark schemes.
History, no matter what the level of study, should be engaging and exciting. The best way to gain an understanding of a historical topic is to engage critically with the past. This means active learning; exploring written and visual sources, both primary and secondary; asking questions of the material; drawing inferences; critiquing conflicting interpretations. These are the skills that bring history alive, that exam boards are looking for, and that guarantee the study of the subject is both enjoyable and successful.
