Personal Description:
Emily is a professional soprano, teacher and music theory tutor with a BA in Music from the University of Cambridge. She currently attends singing lessons at the Royal Academy of Music in London and sings in churches across London, including at the London Oratory, Hampstead Parish Church, and Marylebone Parish Church.
Tutoring Experience:
I have three years of experience tutoring pupils online (for GCSE, A Level, and ABRSM Music Theory grades) and teaching ABRSM singing and beginner piano at her home. I have taught children aged 5 - 18 and have a good understanding of pupils with special educational needs such as autism and ADHD. I am also happy to teach adults.
Tutoring Approach:
Who do I teach?
My teaching is best suited to those wanting to study classical singing and pursue ABRSM theory and practical grades. Having sung in the Choir of Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge as an undergraduate, I am keen to help aspiring young choral singers. I am also very familiar with the GCSE and A Level syllabuses and can provide tuition for all abilities in preparation for these exams. I enjoy teaching both beginners and advanced pupils for singing and theory grades.
Subjects offered:
- A Level Music (Edexcel, AQA, OCR, WJEC, or equivalent)
- GCSE Music (Edexcel, AQA, OCR, WJEC, or equivalent)
- ABRSM Music Theory (Grades 1-8)
- ABRSM Singing (Grades 1-8, diploma, or equivalent)
- ABRSM Piano (Beginner - Grade 5)
What to expect from lessons:
As a teacher, I am friendly, patient and enthusiastic. I always try to tailor lessons to the interests of my pupils, and focus on providing them with a thorough understanding of the subject (whether this be theoretical or technical). A comprehensive musical education is important to me, so whether I'm teaching practical or theoretical grades, I ensure to include a mixture of theory, listening, history, and performance (where appropriate).
Theory, GCSE and A Level: Our first session will run through a practice paper together for me to assess your current ability. There is no expectation to be confident in answering these questions: we will work through it together. For following sessions, I typically ask students to bring a completed exercise set the week before. The quantity of work set varies depending on the capacity of the student to complete it.
Singing and piano lessons: We will always begin the lesson focusing on technique, then move to work on pieces the student has been practising. I will normally set a few technical exercises to practise through the week, as well as one or two pieces to practise.
